Over two decades, the project has embodied three core values: freedom (open licensing and transparent governance), flexibility (a powerful extension ecosystem and robust templating), and innovation (modern architecture, accessibility, and performance improvements across major releases).

Looking Back

  • 2005: The community launches Joomla, establishing a vibrant new chapter for open-source CMS development.
  • 1.x–2.x: Rapid adoption, a growing extension directory, and a strong developer ecosystem.
  • 3.x: Responsive templates, improved UX, and a mature ACL framework become hallmarks of the platform.
  • 4.x–5.x: Accessibility-first design, performance gains, modern PHP standards, and streamlined workflows for administrators and developers.

The Community

Joomla’s success is powered by people—maintainers, extension developers, designers, translators, documentation teams, event organizers, and users worldwide. Their volunteer spirit and shared purpose have sustained the project’s momentum and quality for two decades.

Why Joomla Still Matters

  • Open and sustainable: Community-driven governance and transparent development.
  • Built-in power: Advanced ACL, multilingual support, and content workflows out of the box.
  • Extensible by design: Thousands of extensions and flexible templating for custom solutions.
  • Secure and performant: Ongoing security reviews, modern PHP standards, and performance enhancements.

Looking Ahead

As we celebrate 20 years, we also look to the future: continued improvements in usability, accessibility, and developer experience; deeper integration with modern tooling; and a renewed focus on performance and sustainability. The roadmap remains guided by real-world needs and the open-source ethos that has defined Joomla from the start.

Thank you to everyone who has contributed time, code, documentation, support, and inspiration. Joomla is more than software—it is a community that builds the web together.

Happy 20th Birthday, Joomla! Here’s to the next chapter.

SEO or Search Engine Optimization is essential for becoming successful online. There are a high number of tools to help you in reaching your SEO goals. One of these tools is 4SEO from Weeblr.

What is SEO for Joomla?

Search engine optimization (SEO) improves the quality and quantity of website traffic to a website or a web page from search engines. SEO targets unpaid traffic (known as "natural" or "organic" results) rather than direct traffic or paid traffic. Unpaid traffic may originate from different searches, including image search, video search, academic search, news search, and industry-specific vertical search engines. - WIKIPEDIA -

This extension comes with a modern interface and has autosave built-in, saving you from doing the saving and losing your work.

4SEO has a modern layout and easy-to-understand sections for the different options/settings like sitemaps, page organizing, and error reporting.

Search Engine sitemaps

The extension offers the option to add a sitemap into Google and Bing automatically. It lacs a way to easily add more search engines, but you can add it manually by the link provided.

Functionality: 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥

The 4SEO extension has a lot of tools built-in for maintaining an up-to-date SEO policy for your website.

From the front end, you can, if you log in, both manage how the search engines pick up your page, but you can also pick or change the OpenGraph image for posting on social media like Facebook and Twitter.

4SEO frontend Social Media

It has both light and dark mode included by default; this is seen as the future of good practice and should be implemented in Joomla by default.

Support / Documentation: 🔥🔥🔥🔥

Weeblr is offering top documentation pages for their 4SEO extension. The structure is modern and divided into several categories and sub-categories.

They have also provided an introduction video that explains the basics of 4SEO.

Weeblr offers an open ticket system for each extension. This means that you can see all the tickets’ contents but can not reply to anything other than yours. They do not have a public forum to get help from other users.

Conclusion

To round up my thoughts on the 4SEO extension, I find it relatively easy to use, and it has many tools built in to ease SEO management. Though the extension lack some options, it has most of the main SEO tools built-in.
